May 18 - Chris Gazdick - Discus

island discusSpecial Discounts on Pre-ordered Discus from Island Discus, click here.

Chris Gazdick, owner of Island Discus, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is a Long Island native and is happy to return to talk with us about the care and breeding of discus.

Chris’ fascination with discus was inherited from his grandfather, who told him of large, peaceful, and beautiful fish that were like no other.  Chris already had some experience with aquarium fish, but after visiting a local pet store with his grandpa, they left with a second tank and two discus, and as Chris says, “The addiction had begun …”  One discus tank turned into two and then four until Island Discus was born.  Today, Island Discus operates from Chris’ home, with over 35 tanks, 15 breeding pairs and 3,000+ gallons of water.  Chris specializes in healthy high grade rare discus and his goal is to help everyone appreciate them as much as he and his grandpa.

Discus are some of the most challenging and spectacularly beautiful aquarium fish. So don't miss this unusual opportunity to learn about them from one of the nation's top discus experts.

Help Magic Isle Pet Store

Magic Isles header

On April 5, Magic Isle Pet Store in Centerreach had a destructive fire that killed animals and put the business out of operation.  The store has been a long time source of fish and advice for many in our hobby and many know Joe Carpinone personally.

Newsday article:

Our sympathies go out to Joe and his family and we hope they recover and rebuild soon.  If you would like to contribute to a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of the store, go to:

Welcome Back to LIAS!

Welcome to the beginning of a new season for LIAS!  Be sure to check out the item below about a contest for ideas for a theme for the 2014 NEC Convention.  The deadline for submision of ideas is September 14 at noon.

Our first meeting takes place on Friday, September 20th @ 8pm in Endeavour Hall, at the SUNY Stony Brook’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Bldg, Room 120. This month is also a bowl show month and I hope you plan to enter some fish. Maybe your fish can place and win some ribbons!

Joining us this month is Guy Van Rossum, who comes to us from the Danbury Area Aquarium Society and will be talking to us about "The Finer Points of Fish Photography." Hopefully, this will help members take great pictures for the annual holiday calendar and the Paradise Press.

Remember that September is when LIAS membership is renewed.

NEC 2017 Information

nec 2017 banner

2017 nec poster thumbnailThe Northeast Council of Aquarium Societies is proud to announce our 2017 Annual Convention will return to the fabulous Sheraton Hartford South on MARCH 10-12.

"Going to the NEC" has been a tradition among hobbyists for over 40 years, making it the longest running, and one of the largest, all-species organized aquarium hobby events in the Western Hemisphere. (we must be doing something right!) Last year's "NEC" received much acclaim for its non-stop diversity of offerings and friendly atmosphere.

The 2017 Convention is OPEN TO ALL and will feature 3 days of: multiple speakers and programs, multiple shows/exhibitions, multiple auctions, multiple specialty club meetings, multiple fish/plant/dry good vendors, manufacturer booths, hospitality room, full-course chef-prepared buffet meals, raffles and freebies, amazingly modern and comfortable accommodations, and most of all, the chance to meet and greet friendly hobbyists from around the country (and from other countries!).

Stay tuned for more!  We will be posting updates on this site and our Facebook Event Page at
