October 2024 Meeting

October 2024 Meeting

Next Meeting – Friday, Oct. 18, Speaker: Longtime LIAS member Jeff Bollbach

Hello All,

I know I have been late in getting out my meeting letters and I usually like to send two, one right after the meeting and another just before. This letter may serve as both. I will be better at the letters in the winter when I do not have as much outside work to do.

Our first meeting of the year was great as usual, and I am looking forward to our future meetings. I laid out our plans for the future this year, but of course nothing is written in stone and can and will probably change. Dues will be collected at the next meeting, and I hope to also have our club shirts! Also, I hope people are thinking about running for spots in our November election. I am always grateful for all the help I get during the meeting which makes it much easier for me. There is a lot of set up that goes into the meeting beforehand, so when I get there, it is a relief that the help is there.

I know our first meeting was a mingle meeting just to get the ball rolling again. I opened the floor to any questions or problems, and nobody had any. We are fish keepers, and I know we always have problems. I started talking about my problem and it turned into a discussion and a bunch of email questions afterwards. For future meetings if you have a problem or a question, give it to me before the meeting. This is how we all learn from each other.

The raffle, fish auction, and fish show went off without a hitch. Our usual treasurer was on vacation, so John and his wife were a great help. John did the treasury, and his wife helped me set up the refreshments. Buzz did double duty, which was exhausting for him, being not only the fish show chairman, but the fish auctioneer because Ed was on Vacation. Nefes, our vice president helped with check-in because Peter was running late. Tracy, Carla, and Tiffany helped me sell and pick the raffle tickets. It was great to have all the alternate help. Of course, Ray is always there first helping me set up with other early arrivals.

Speaking of pictures, we need more for our calendar. I would really like to make the calendar, and the end of this month is the deadline. Send me pictures for the calendar and any questions you have for the next meeting.

The Meeting will start at the usual time around 7:30-8, but always appreciate the people that get there at 7:00 to help me set up.

September 2024 Meeting

September 2024 Meeting

Hello All!

It’s time for our club to wake up from summer hibernation. This is a great time to break down outside tubs and get ready to bring fish to our meeting auction.

This year is our second full year since the club reactivated. We had a great first year and worked out most of the kinks. Now I want to make this year even better. The board has been working on shirts, bags, and other paraphernalia with our new logo. I will unveil our new logo at the meeting and hopefully, we’ll have shirts ready.

We won’t have a speaker at this first meeting, but we’ll have a mingle meeting. We will have the usual Fish Show, Raffle, Fish Auction and of course Refreshments. I will talk about how the next year will be laid out. We always need help and if you are willing to volunteer even for one meeting it is greatly appreciated. Member dues will start to be collected for the year. The dues help to pay for the venue and other fun things for the club. As the club grows, I hope to do events outside of the usual meetings.

Also, please take pictures of some or just one of your fish so we can do a great calendar this year!

So please join us on Friday, September 20th. I would love to see a big Fish Show and Fish Auction. You can show off the fish that you have been raising all summer. For the auction, bring in the tub fish and any other extras so you’ll have room to pick up something new at our auction.

The Meeting will start at the usual time around 7:30-8, but always appreciate the people that get there at 7:00 to help me set up.

Summer Update

Summer Update

Hello All!

It’s August already.  We are always trying to cram beach, pool and barbeque into three months, but in the end many of us cannot wait for fall and winter.  That is when we start up with our indoor fish that we neglected somewhat during the summer, and we return to our club meetings.  Many of us have ponds or tub gardens outside that we are having fun with right now.

I know it’s been a while since our last farewell meeting for the summer.  Had lots of personal stuff I had to deal with.  What a great meeting with Food, People and of course Fish!  My friend from Nino’s, the hero place in Smithtown really hooked us up with the heroes. The owner and the two guys that work with him all went to my store for many years and may join us when we start up again. They took their tanks down a few years after I closed my store, losing interest.

Our club keeps growing and at the last meeting I was able to talk to more of the members, both old and new, and got to know them.  I think many of the members also were able to meet and talk to people that they did not before. I like having presentations and parties, but I think the meetings where we have nothing planned also work. We learn from each other more sometimes than in a presentation. I am going to keep mixing it up with some things planned and sometimes just a mingle meeting.

As far as fish go, I am very happy with our fish auctions.  We have some amazing breeders in our club that are always bringing fish to the auction, and I thank them very much.  If you have even one fish, it’s fun to see what you get for the fish and who buys it.  Equally fun is bidding on fish to see what you win it for.  It is not, however, fun to bid against the president LOL.

We have also had some great fish shows and members should bring a fish.  You never know if you are going to win. Our last fish show winners were me with First and Third, and Ray sandwiched between with Second. Our regular raffle and special can raffle were also a great success with many members winning filters and lighting for their tanks.

Our next meeting will be Friday, September 20.  Have a good rest of the summer!
